John Short
MBBS, MRCOG, FRANZCOG
Gynaecologist
Urogynaecology
Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
John's expertise covers the spectrum of women's health conditions including fertility investigation, menstrual disorders, pelvic pain and colposcopy.
He particularly specialises in the management of urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse (including complex and recurrent conditions) and endometriosis.
"I chose to work in this field because it is the most rewarding area I encountered in all of my medical training. Women's lives can be changed by the treatments we offer. Each patient I see brings her own unique set of circumstances, concerns and expectations to her first visit, and I enjoy talking with patients to figure out a plan of treatment that will improve their quality of life."
John also has established interests in service improvement and medical education. He is an active member of the Canterbury Initiative and HealthPathways teams and is lead gynaecologist for safety and quality at Christchurch Women's Hospital.
John has received additional training in gynaecological ultrasound and has a particular interest in ultrasound assessment of the pelvic floor and vaginal prolapse.
He graduated in Medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom) in 1995. After completing his House Officer placements and working in Australia, he pursued a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He completed his specialist training in the North-East of England and moved to Christchurch in October 2006 to be a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Christchurch Women's Hospital.
John's wife, Kylie, is a nursing lecturer at Ara, and they have two children and a dog. John enjoys various pursuits including football, skiing and trying to get fit.
