Mindful Physiotherapist

Jo Hopkinson-Haigh

Teaching simple breathing and mindfulness techniques to help people manage pain, anxiety and stress is one of physiotherapist Jo Hopkinson-Haigh’s specialties.

With 20 years’ experience in the public and private health sectors, Jo believes a holistic approach to physiotherapy is important in supporting her patients to look after all aspects of their wellbeing.

In her practice, Jo uses breathwork, pain education, acupuncture, mindfulness, myofascial release massage and exercise prescription, including simple yoga techniques. She is also experienced in working alongside psychologists and pain specialists, providing pain management sessions for chronic pain patients.

Jo says that learning how to rewire your brain to turn down pain and anxiety is empowering. ‘Pain isn’t just physical. Psychological and social factors are major influences in people’s pain levels.” For example, recognising when you are in the red zone (fight or flight response) and the green zone (rest and digest) is crucial for pain and stress management.

Jo also teaches simple strategies to help optimise sleep and supports her patients to maximise their health and wellbeing by gradually introducing more exercise into their day. Jo is a qualified contemporary yoga instructor. She designs individual yoga and meditation techniques for her patients.

When Jo isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends outdoors. She plays and coaches a variety of sports and loves to keep fit.
